THOMASTON - Coming off a 5-10-1 season, the Thomaston High School field hockey program begins a new chapter in its’ storied history with John Long taking over as head coach when the team starts the 2019 season at home against Newington High School on Monday, September 16 in a non-league game at 4 p.m.

“We will be a young team with a solid core of skilled players in our lineup who are stromg on both sides of the ball,” said  Long, who takes the reins from Annemarie Manning.

“Our only returning seniors are co-captains Alexa Kowalski and Kaylee Falter,” said Long. “Alexa will anchor the forward line while Kaylee will solidify the defense.”

Junior Hannah Laone, sophomore Olivia Thier, and sophomore Aurelia Baker are also going to key players for us,” said Long.

“Their and Falter will be hard to get by in most situations,” said Long of the defensive stalwarts.

“Aurelia, Hannah, and Alexa and a strong, mostly sophomore-dominated midfield, gives us a constant scoring threat,” Long added.

Speaking of that sophomore class, Long evinced complete confidence.

“It is a deep and talented group who could very well make up  the majority of our go-to players,” said Long, who is not walking into the job with a getting-to-know-you attitude.

“Even though I’m the first-year head coach, I coached the majority of these players when they played in middle school and enjoyed an undefeated season when our now-sophomore class were the core players,” Long said.

“We are going to fine-tune our structures on both sides of the ball, work on fitness, and work hard to better last season’s record and return to being a firce the state Class ‘S’ playoff field,” a determined Long said after a recent practice.
