SOUTHBURY - Coming off an emotional comeback victory in their previous match against Oxford High School, the Watertown High School boys’ soccer team faced a non-league opponent when it traveled to Southbury for a match against Pomperaug High School on October 11.

Would the Indians be ‘up’ for the Panthers, who came into the day’s action winners of only two of their eight previous matches?

You’d better believe it, as they extended their winning streak to eight consecutive matches with a 1-0 win on a goal by Justin Calabrese off a throw-in by from Liam Farrell.

The victory boosted the Indians‘ overall record to 8-1-0 while the Panthers of the South-West Conference dropped to 2-6-1.

Lucas Fenn made four saves in the Indians’ fourth shutout win.

SENIOR NIGHT TO SAVOR

Someday in the distant future, the Indians’ Class of 2022 will regale their friends and families with the story of their Senior Night match at the Mills Complex.

Trailing at halftime, 2-0 on October 5, the Indians came all the way back to edge Oxford High School, 3-2, knocking the Wolverines from the ranks of the unbeaten at the Mills Complex on October 5.

Junior Luke Acuna scored the first goal in the second half an assist from Senior Captain Justin Calabrese five minutes into the half to begin the momentum shift.

Senior Captain Wes Kulikauskas scored the equalizer on a gorgeous header off a corner kick from Justin Calabrese and a sense of the inevitable began to envelop the occasion, that the Indians were destined to complete their comeback.

With five minutes remaining, it happened, as Calabrese scored the tie-breaking (and in Oxford’s case, back-breaking) goalthird goal to put Watertown in the lead with 5 minutes remaining, a lead that there was no way the locals were going to let slip away from them.

Goalie Lucas Fenn made five saves for the Indians, who improved to 7-1-0 while Oxford fell to 4-1-0, but the players won’t recall the records of the team; instead they’ll recall what they did as a team that night.
