BETHLEHEM/WOODBURY – Nonnewaug High School Principal Pamela Sordi explained to the Region 14 Board of Education, meeting Monday, June 15, that the district will begin to use Edgenuity as a solution for both summer school programs and to bolster learning for struggling students in the coming school year.

The district will not be offering summer school for younger students and will operate on a modified scheduled for older students who were not completely engaged in distance learning. No student was failed, but those who were not sufficiently engaged received incompletes.

Classes will be conducted in the cafeteria, using social distancing. A single coordinator will be paired with up to 10 students, four days per week. The first session will run from July 6 to July 17. The second session, for a different group of students, will run from July 20 to July 31.

Edgenuity, an online set of programs students may access in school, calls itself “a leading provider of K–12 online curriculum and blended learning solutions” that “specializes in online courses, test preparation, and more.” The program offers many different courses and may be customized to include specific areas of study within a subject.

The board approved a new bus contract with All Star Transportation. The contract will be in effect 2020-21 through 2024-25.

In other action, the board named sophomore Andrew Stone as the district’s “clockmaster,” a new title. Andrew, who has a special interest in timepieces, will be in charge of assuring clocks are on schedule. He will be presented with a watch to help him fulfill his duties.
